Se recomanda studiul somnului pe timpul noptii in care se urmareste: - daca bolnavului i se opreste sau nu respiratia, cat de sever este sforaitul si de cate ori trezeste bolnavul din somn in timpul noptii - cat de scazut este nivelul oxigenului in momentul in care bolnavului i se opreste respiratia si reactia inimii la nivelul scazut de oxigen - daca bolnavul se trezeste din cauza apneei sau a sforaitului.

In cazul in care se descopera intreruperea semnificativa a respiratiei in timpul somnului, este recomandata terapia cu presiune continua pozitiva in caile respiratorii PCPR pe durata somnului.

Aceasta terapie trebuie initiata intr-o clinica specializata pentru a se asigura preintampinarea si rezolvarea tuturor evenimentelor majore.

In general nu este recomandata folosirea pe termen lung a unui medicament, deoarece pot aparea efecte adverse si pot masca manifestarile bolii care cauzeaza insomnia, impiedicand astfel un tratament corect.

In cazul in care, medicamentul folosit pe termen lung, care de altfel a ameliorat insomnia fara a avea efecte adverse, este intrerupt brusc din proprie initiativa, persoana poate deveni psihologic si chiar fiziologic dependenta de el, ceea ce va agrava suferinta.

Cu toate acestea, in cazurile, in care insomnia este secundara anxietatii, depresiei sau unor factori de stres , tratamentul medicamentos cronic este recomandat.
